Operatic Own : surnom fictif d’un régiment
Santley : Célèbre Baryton
Bulbul : (<persan) oiseau apprécié pour son chant.

Vieille est la chanson que je chante -
Vieille comme mes factures impayées -
Vieille comme la poule que les khitmutgars servent
Aux hôtes des Dak-bungalows - vieille comme les Montagnes.

Ahasuerus Jenkins, de l'« Operatic Own »,
Était doté d'une voix de ténor au timbre « super Santley. »
Ses idées sur l'équitation étaient peut-être un rien étranges.
Il n'avait pas une assiette digne d'être mentionnée, mais oh ! il avait  de l'oreille. 

Il matraquait sa pauvre compagnie une douzaine de fois par jour ;
Il descendait de son cheval de manière parabolique ;
Sa façon de saluer faisait la joie de tous les spectateurs,
Mais Ahasuerus Jenkins avait la tête sur les épaules. 

Il passa deux mois à Simla au printemps,
Et sous les cèdres de l’Himalaya chantait sans fin
Il gazouillait comme un bulbul, mais surtout pour
Cornelia Agrippina, qui était musicale et corpulente. 

Elle dominait un mari humble, qui, à son tour, contrôlait un Département
Où étaient gardés les oiseaux humains de Cornelia Agrippina
D'avril à octobre, moyennant une généreuse rémunération,
Versée, bien sûr, chaque mois, par le Trésor indien. 

Cornelia chantait avec lui, et Jenkins jouait ;
Il louait sans vergogne ses notes, car il était aussi faux qu’elles ;
Alors, quand les vents d'avril firent brunir les roses en bouton,
Cornelia a dit à son mari : « Tom, tu ne dois pas le renvoyer. » 

Ils l’arrachèrent de son régiment, qui ne le regretta pas beaucoup ;
Ils lui trouvèrent un tabouret de bureau, et sur ce tabouret ils l'installèrent
Pour jouer avec des cartes et des catalogues trois heures par jour,
Et toucher sa confortable rente, c'est-à-dire son double salaire. 

Maintenant, après chaque dîner, lorsque les tasses de café sont apportées,
Ahasuerus se lamente au-dessus du grand pianoforte ;
Et, grâce à la belle Cornelia, sa renommée s'est accrue,
Et Ahasuerus Jenkins est une Puissance influente dans l'État !

Ahasuerus Jenkins of the "Operatic Own,"
Was dowered with a tenor voice of super-Santley tone.
His views on equitation were, perhaps, a trifle queer.
He had no seat worth mentioning, but oh! he had an ear. 

He clubbed his wretched company a dozen times a day;
He used to quit his charger in a parabolic way;
His method of saluting was the joy of all beholders,
But Ahasuerus Jenkins had a head upon his shoulders. 

He took two months at Simla when the year was at the spring,
And underneath the deodars eternally did sing.
He warbled like a bul-bul but particularly at
Cornelia Agrippina, who was musical and fat. 

She controlled a humble husband, who, in turn, controlled a Dept.
Where Cornelia Agrippina's human singing-birds were kept
From April to October on a plump retaining-fee,
Supplied, of course, per mensem, by the Indian Treasury. 

Cornelia used to sing with him, and Jenkins used to play;
He praised unblushingly her notes, for he was false as they;
So when the winds of April turned the budding roses brown,
Cornelia told her husband: - "Tom, you mustn't send him down." 

They haled him from his regiment, which didn't much regret him;
They found for him an office-stool, and on that stool they set him
To play with maps and catalogues three idle hours a day,
And draw his plump retaining-fee - which means his double pay. 

Now, ever after dinner, when the coffee-cups are brought,
Ahasuerus waileth o'er the grand pianoforte;
And, thanks to fair Cornelia, his fame hath waxen great,
And Ahasuerus Jenkins is a Power in the State!
